The first day of January saw a new arrival to Netflix, with the "Tidying up with Marie Kondo" show launching just in time for the new year ahead. If you've ever despaired at the clutter that seems to creep up on you when you least expect it (haven't we all), this is the perfect show for you.
As big supporters of clutter-free homes and functional living spaces, the show went straight to the top of our viewing list and here are a few tips we've learned so far.
1) Get Messy
Slightly counterintuitive at first, Kondo suggests placing all the items you wish to sort into one big pile on your bed, or in the middle of the room. This way everything is in one place, you can't miss anything and it's the central focus point from which to begin.
2) Clutter-free Categories
Most tidying techiniques would suggest starting by room, but Kondo insists that you approach your organising by classifying everything into 5 categories: clothing, books, papers, miscellaneous and mementos. Then you pick one to focus on entirely until each one is complete.
3) Joy and Gratitude
Sometimes it's easy to buy blindly, or be taken by an item that is heavily discounted, regardless of whether it really adds to our interior spaces or makes us feel genuinely happy. Kondo recommends holding each item individually to discover whether it "sparks joy". Does the items give you a good feeling or evoke a positive memory? If the answer is yes, it can stay. If not, it's time to say "thank you" to the item before letting it go.
4) Box it up
When you're working through your pile, there are always miscellanious items that just don't seem to fit anywhere. Using small boxes for those items harder to find a home for means that you can still keep all your possesions tidy and organised.
5) Side by Side
When it comes to clothes we typically fold and pile items on top of each other. Kondo recommends folding your clothes and then stacking them vertically, side-by-side, so that you can see everything you have in one quick glance. This avoids things going unused and duplicating items, having forgotten about the original at the bottom of the pile.
