Starting the new year can be both exciting and a little nerve wracking if there are big things you want to achieve over the next 12 months. Sometimes it can be hard to know where to start in order to be as successful as you possibly can.
Whether you want to be healthier, improve your work-life balance or simply make sure you spend time doing the things that bring you real happiness, it seems to be that making a plan is the best place to start. In fact, a recent study shows that the simple art of writing down your goals in great detail makes you between 1.2 and 1.4 times more likely to achieve them.
But what makes you stick to them? In the absence of a magic wand to bring us what our hearts desire, we've done some resarch to bring you 5 tips that should help us all stay on track.
1. Look Back to Move Forward
Take a moment to think back over the past year. It's likely that some bad stuff happened, but also some great things happened too. By figuring out what made you feel happy, inspired and motivated in 2018, you can make notes on what you would like 2019 to include for you. And, as we now know, writing it down means it is much more likely to happen.
2. Don't Be so Hard on Yourself
"Goals" instead of "Resolutions" are much more postiive. It's all about working towards something you'd like to achieve, rather than admonishing yourself for something you haven't yet managed to do. Be your biggest cheerleader, not your biggest critic.
3. Sharing is Caring
Tell people about what you want to do. Get their support and encouragement, but also get a sense of accountability. It would seem that others knowing motivates you to keep going. Perhaps so when the question about how it's all going comes, you can respond with an answer you're proud of.
4. Start Small
By breaking your goals down into smaller chunks they seem more attainable. And you are less likely to lose focus or be demotivated. Little and often seems to be the idea here. Which also seems to be a much kinder way of doing things too!
5. Celebrate Little Victories
Don't wait until you have achieved everything you set out to before you give yourself a well-earned pat on the back. Celebrate everytime you reach a milestone you've set out to meet. The act of rewarding yourself makes you feel happy and you'll begin to associate postivity with the efforts you're making to achieve your goals.
Sounds simple enough! Guess we better make a start then. Just one more cup of tea first. Then we'll get to work on making 2019 happen.
We wish you all the best with your new year goals. Do let us know how you get on in the comments below.
