Why Is Acacia Wood Used for Outdoor Furniture?
Acacia wood is one of the most popular choices for high-quality outdoor garden furniture because it offers an excellent balance of durability, natural resistance, beauty, and affordability.
What You Need to Know About Acacia Wood Furniture
Wood is a living material and Acacia wood is mostly used for outdoors, so it's bound to be exposed to various elements. When exposed to rain or humid environments it will expand. When exposed to sun or dry air environment it will contract. Exposure to these elements can cause minor cracks, chips, peels, or splinters in your Acacia furniture. This process is called warping. This process is natural and unavoidable. However, with regular maintenance which involves cleaning, sanding and oiling you can maintain your Acacia furniture and increase its life for years.
How To Treat Acacia Wood
Clean your furniture with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean cloth or sponge. Allow furniture to air dry completely for at least 24 hours. Once the furniture is completely dry, use a fine-grade sand paper to remove any rough patches. Using a clean brush evenly apply a first coat of CLEAR hardwood/teak wood oil to the furniture, if necessary apply a second coat after approximately one hour. We'd recommend this treatment to be repeated once to twice a year.
Can Acacia Wood Get Wet?
Yes, acacia wood can get wet. It is designed for outdoor use. However, prolonged exposure to moisture causes the wood to expand, and repeated wet/dry cycles contribute to natural warping. Regular oiling helps protect the wood and reduces the effects of moisture.
Does Acacia Wood Rot?
Yes, like all wood, acacia wood can rot if not properly maintained. The legs are particularly vulnerable as they sit on potentially wet surfaces. To help prevent rot, Place rubber or protective caps on the bottom of the legs, and use protective covers or store the furniture when not in use.
Can You Sand Acacia Wood?
Yes, you can sand acacia wood as part of regular maintenance. Once the furniture is completely dry after cleaning, use fine-grade sandpaper to gently remove any rough patches, splinters, or raised grain. This prepares the surface for a fresh coat of hardwood oil.
