A Saturday spent sailing on the Solent proved to be enjoyable change of pace from our usual jobs at Garden Trading!
Our founder Jon Holloway generously organised the day with Sunsail sailing school to reward the staff for all their hard work throughout the year, as well as to help build the team spirit that is so important to being a part of Garden Trading.
Our team set off bright and early in order to get to Portsmouth, where a much-appreciated breakfast awaited us before we split into three teams and got ready to board the 40-foot yachts which we would be spending the day on.
Once on the water, the first challenge was a race to see which team could raise their sail fastest, which got everyone feeling competitive. From there we sailed across calm waters to the Isle of Wight, taking turns steering, learning a little about navigation and landmarks, and also taking some time to just enjoy the gentle bobbing of the boat while basking in the warm weather.
There wasn’t an awful lot of wind, but happily by the afternoon there was just enough to get a real sailing race going. Suddenly the engines were off, and everyone was feeling competitive and ready to get going on the jobs they’d been given, from tacking off, to manning the winches, to steering and sometimes just staying out of the way and making sure the boat was balanced!
We would like to say a huge thank you to the team from Sunsail for everything they did to teach us how to sail and make this experience enjoyable. From the pleasant journey to and from the Isle of Wight, to the delicious food, to the hilarious and spirited races, we had a great deal of fun and a fantastic day.
