Lighting Guide

With over 150 lights in our range, choosing the right piece for the desired location can be difficult. Our lighting guide has been built to explain further about LED Bulbs, IP ratings and bathroom zones. Our outdoor and bathroom lights are rated IP44 or above and exact details can be found within the specifications on each lighting product page.

Lumens

A lumen is the measurement of brightness that a light gives out.

One lumen is deemed to be approximately equal to the light of one candle from one foot (30cms) away.

So, if a bulb has 800 lumens - the light it produces is approximately the same level of light produced by 800 candles.

Wattage

Watts measure the amount of electrical power a light bulb consumes. The brightness depends on the technology as per the table below.

Colour Temperature

Our Bulbs

All our bulbs use the latest LED technology, giving a warm light (colour temperature 2700 - 3000K) and the majority are fully dimmable.

IP RATINGS

IP means Ingress Protection. The first digit indicates protection against solid objects and the second is protection against moisture.

How do IP Ratings work?

First Digit (Solid):

  • 0. No protection.
  • 1. Protected against a solid object greater than 50mm such as a hand.
  • 2. Protected against a solid object greater than 12.5mm such as a finger.
  • 3. Protected against a solid object greater than 2.5mm such as a wire.
  • 4. Protected against a solid object greater than 1.0mm such as a thin strap.
  • 5. Dust protected. Prevents ingress of dust sufficient to cause harm.
  • 6. Dust tight. No ingress of dust.

Second Digit (Liquid):

  • 0. No protection.
  • 1. Protected against water drops.
  • 2. Protected against water drops at a 15 degree angle.
  • 3. Protected against water spray at a 60 degree angle..
  • 4. Protected against water splashing from any angle.
  • 5. Protected against low pressure jets of water from any angle.
  • 6. Protected against powerful jets of water from any angle.
  • 7. Protected against the effects of temporary submersion in water (30 minutes at 3 feet).
  • 8. Protected against the effects of permanent submersion in water (up to 13 feet).

Example:

IP44 - Protected against a solid object greater than 1.0mm, such as a thin strap. Protected against water splashing from any angle.

BATHROOM ZONES

What IP Rating do I need for my bathroom?

It’s important to know where you would like to position your bathroom light. The positioning of the bathroom light will determine the IP Rating required in that location of the bathroom.

See below for marked zones of the bathroom and the related IP Rating required for that position.

  • ZONE 1. Within the bath or shower tray. All lights within this area must be IP68 rated and low voltage.
  • ZONE 2. Above the bath or shower to a height of 2.25m. All lights within this area should be to a minimum of IP44 rated.
  • ZONE 3. 0.6m outside of Zone 1 and a 60cm radius above washstands. All lights within this area should be a minimum of IP44 rated.
