Tide Clock FAQ

What is a Tide Clock?

A tide clock is a special type of clock designed to show the approximate times of high tide and low tide for your local coastal area. Unlike a normal clock that completes a full cycle every 12 hours, a tide clock rotates once every 12 hours and 25 minutes to stay in step with the lunar day (24 hours and 50 minutes). It’s a beautiful and practical addition to any coastal home, helping sailors, beachgoers, fishermen, and gardeners plan activities around the tides.

How Does a Tide Clock Work?

A tide clock works by tracking the gravitational pull of the moon, which is the main driver of ocean tides. The mechanism is engineered to rotate the hand once every 12 hours and 25 minutes, twice during each lunar day. This keeps the clock aligned with the natural tidal cycle rather than solar time. While it provides a reliable guide, real tide times can vary slightly due to local factors such as wind, weather patterns, atmospheric pressure, and the moon’s phase. When set correctly, your Garden Trading tide clock should stay accurate to within approximately 30 minutes.

How to Set a Tide Clock

Move the hand to ‘HighTide’ position by rotating the ‘Set Knob’. Then, insert 1 x AA battery into the battery compartment on the day of a full moon at exactly the time of the high tide according to local tide tables. Take care to observe the polarity on the battery. Set in this manner, your tide clock should be correct to within 30 minutes.
