Tips to Style your Outdoor Lighting

With over 75 lights in the Garden Trading Outdoor Lighting collection, our offering continues to grow each year as demand from our customers keeps increasing. We caught up with Jon Holloway, the founder of Garden Trading, to find out what makes this range so successful and his top tips for achieving both functionality and style for every outdoor space.

Before launching Garden Trading in 1994, Jon designed and developed homeware and lighting products for companies including Habitat, Conran and John Lewis. In the US his client base included Pottery Barn, Williams-Sonoma, Crate & Barrel and the original garden lifestyle brand Smith and Hawken. This experience influenced Garden Trading’s unique outdoor lighting range.

“We launched our first outdoor light in 1994 and up to this day our focus remains on simple but intelligently designed outdoor lights that complement contemporary and classic environments.”

Jon firmly believes that the practise of lighting your property will depend on the style of your home. An approach that will complement a period property may not necessarily work to the best advantage on a contemporary home.

“Classic properties often have a beautiful texture and using outdoor lighting creatively can create a captivating highlight and enhance your properties features.”

“If you are lighting a more contemporary home you should look at more subtle lighting with a simplicity that will complement the clean lines.”

“It is essential and very important to only install lighting that is safe to be used in outdoor conditions. All outdoor lighting must be at least IP44 rated. Essentially this means your lighting is protected against the ingress of water.”

At Garden Trading our full range of outdoor lighting is rated IP44 or above, offering even greater protection from the weather. Before purchasing any outdoor lights, it is important to consider the area you are trying to light and the sustainability of that environment. Properties in coastal locations will attract more aggressive erosion than inland homes, and in this case, you should opt for lights that have a suitable finish such as our Devonport, St Ives or Chatham ranges.

“While certain lighting designs will always remain a staple, there are undoubtedly new trends coming to the surface and there is a lot for our customers to be inspired by. There are even more functional solutions for your garden and outdoor living space.”

“While we have evolved, our ethos remains the same; to embrace a clean, practical and uncluttered lifestyle. Combining classic materials with innovative and functional designs, adding distinctive style to any setting.”
