September is one of the busiest in the garden and is definitely one of our favourites… we love the clement weather, the autumnal smell of wood-smoke, the harvesting of apples, pears and plums, the garden’s palette changing to red, orange and brown and the first of many more mugs of soup.
In the garden, it’s time for an Autumn clean up! Ignore this tedious task at your peril and make the most of the remaining warmth while you can!
So here’s our work-list for September
• Decide which plants you want to move later in the year, before the foliage disappears.
• Shape and structure shrubs for next year (and use longer cuttings for display).
• Clear ground level debris under plants, before the leaves start piling up on top.
• Plant some new spring bulbs and choose some different varieties of tulips like parrot and lily-flowered.
• Start getting your winter salads in the soil, think about utilsing empty flower beds and pots for winter salads and veg.
• Use your well-prepared compost wisely.
• Don’t forget to carry on watering.
• Harvest the last of your summer herbs and freeze them in usable portions.
• Store your surplus potatoes and hard fruits (a good place is your potting shed).
• Clean out your greenhouse, potting shed … and all those dark corners.
• Bring tender house plants indoors, it’s surprising how many annuals will overwinter.
• Treat yourself to a new pot and plant and plant it up for next year’s display.

• Take afternoon tea somewhere grand - Liberty in London is our once-a-year treat, stylish yet traditional.
• Make a point of acquainting yourself with a local farm shop – you might need to try a few to find ‘yours’, there’s a growing number that produce their own organic fruit and veg.
• Swap your surplus garden produce with friends and family and make pies, jams, crumbles and endless healthy soups!
