Border in a Box
31 August 2017
Earlier this year, Jon Holloway, Founder and Managing Director of Garden Trading was invited to participate in judging the ‘Garden Products’ category of the Country Homes & Interiors My Country Business Awards.
These annual Awards are all about promoting and empowering the new generation of creative businesses who are living and working in the British countryside. The awards have been going for eight years and are aimed at helping all kinds of designer-makers, food producers and lifestyle businesses to achieve their dreams.
Country Homes & Interiors love being in – and designing – outdoor spaces, and so the ‘Garden Products’ category celebrates everything related to the outside, from crafted chairs to beautiful ceramic pots and the latest shed designs. Jon founded Garden Trading in 1994, after 10 years designing products for leading retailers including John Lewis and Habitat, providing him with a wealth of experience to lend to this challenge.
After reviewing many interesting and innovative entrees, Jon settled on Nikki Hollier’s garden border design kit business ‘Border in a Box’ as the winner. The idea for Border in a Box came about when Nikki moved into a new-build property with a small uninspiring garden and didn’t know how or where to start in creating a pretty space. After retraining as a garden designer at Pershore Horticultural College & the Cotswold Gardening School, the idea turned into a new business. Nikki wanted to help everyone create a lovely garden, which was easy to do, in less than a day and without the designer price tag.
Jon commented that he selected Border in a Box as the winning brand as it is a genuinely innovative new brand offering a cost-effective solution with very rewarding results if implemented well. Jon could see the commercial potential of Nikki’s brand, suggesting that the business could develop in the future with different garden options to expand the range.
Nikki has won a package including 3 mentoring sessions with Jon, coverage in the November issue of the magazine and the chance to exhibit at the Country Homes & Interiors Summer Show 2018 – so keep a look out for her if you pop along!
Delighted winner Nikki commented that ‘I’m over the moon! A national award like this means so much to a small business like mine and it really helps get my unique gardening gift noticed in a busy marketplace’.
