Big Garden Birdwatch

21 January 2015

Bird Feeders and Hedgehog Houses at Garden TradingThis weekend (January 24th and 25th) is the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch. Will you be getting involved? Last year around half a million people took part and counted 7 million birds.

Bird populations are a great indicator of the health of the countryside, so surveys like the Big Garden Birdwatch are great for keeping an eye on the ups and downs of the wildlife across the country. All you need to do is spend one hour over the weekend counting the birds that appear in your garden. It's that simple! The more people involved, the more the RSPB can learn.

Which birds you'll see can vary depending on where you live, what food you provide and where you place it. We recommend investing in a hanging bird feeder filled with energy-rich seeds to attract some feathered friends to your garden. This will keep them safely out of reach of any lurking cats and help you to give the birds a helping hand all year round. With a hanging bird feeder you can expect to see birds such as Blue Tits, Long-Tailed Tits and Great Tits time and time again.

Why not go a step further and invest in a hedgehog house too? These charming houses are safe and secure from cats and foxes, and provide the perfect place for a hedgehog to hibernate over winter or raise a family in the spring. Plus, with hedgehogs in residence you’ll have no need for slug repellent as Hedgehogs find these juicy critters delicious.
