One of the most notorious aphrodisiacs, oysters are high in zinc and have a reputation for being great for love and fertility. It is due to this reputation and the aura of indulgence that they are regarded as a classic dish for a romantic meal.
Less well known however, is that the oyster’s less glamourous (and less expensive) cousin, the mussel, deserves the same reputation. Did you know that mussels were among the seafood consumed in ancient Greece, where it was believed that all seafood was the playthings of the goddess of love? It was here that these plump and delicious bivalves began their aphrodisiac history.
Here at Garden Trading we were a bit sceptical, so we did a bit more digging. Looking into nutritional values, we can start to see why this reputation may actually be deserved. Mussels provide lean protein, (essential for sustained energy for a night of passion) and are packed full of manganese, iron, selenium and zinc – all essential for a healthy body (and libido).
Once regarded as the poor relation of the shellfish family because of their small size and relative abundance, mussels are now very popular and fairly cheap – providing a great alternative to oysters for your night of romance. The most common Blue or European mussels have sleek, shiny shells and tender, nutritious flesh. When steamed with white wine or roasted with herbs and garlic, mussels make a beautifully satisfying but unusual dish - especially when paired with a chilled glass of Pinot Grigio!
