Show Your Mum Some Love this Mother's Day
01 March 2016
There are plenty of theories on and stories about the origins of Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday, but they all share one thing in common – people really wanted to celebrate their mothers.
In the UK, Mothering Sunday falls on Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday in Lent. Since the 1600s this has traditionally been a day off from fasting when people could treat themselves or servants were allowed to take a day off to visit their loved ones. With readings on this day about “Jerusalem our Mother”, Christians would return to the “Mother Church”, but combined with the desire to visit family on the holiday and the efforts of campaigners, the day has now become more about honouring our own mothers.
In America, the holiday falls on a different day, but had more secular roots, owing its success to Anna Jarvis, who, inspired by her own mother, campaigned to honour the efforts and sacrifices made by mothers for their children.
No matter how you celebrate the holiday, lots of us will be taking this Sunday to visit or call our mums and let them know that we appreciate all that they have done for us. Why not to spoil her with breakfast in bed? Just fill up any of our trays with toast, eggs, or whatever she likes, and let her start her day in complete relaxation.
Or, if afternoon tea is her idea of a treat, break out the scones and clotted cream or cakes and little sandwiches, and make sure she has a hot cup of her favourite brew fresh from the pot. If you like to exchange gifts, we have lots of inspiration in our Mother’s Day collection, with plenty to make any mum feel special, including our Broadwell Glass range of vases, bound to make any flowers she receives look their best.
So to all mothers, relax and enjoy yourself this Sunday - Happy Mother’s Day from Garden Trading!
