National Gardening Week

15 April 2015

This week (April 13th – 19th) is National Gardening Week, and with the beaming sunshine there is no excuse for not rolling up your sleeves and getting your garden in shape!

Gardening can seem like a mammoth task, but it doesn’t need to be, read on for a few quick and simple tips to get your garden summer-ready in no time.

Pots and Planters

A quick and easy way to instantly beautify your garden is to invest in a few planters; filled with vibrant flowering shrubs and strategically placed these will easily transform the drabbest of outdoor spaces into a welcoming environment. After all, who wants to sit and stare at a plain fence while enjoying a nice cold beverage outdoors?

Our new St Mawes Planters are going down a storm, find out why our buying team are loving these so much here. Our new Vence Planters are also proving popular this year and it’s easy to see why, modelled on Victorian Wash Dolly Tubs, these add a timeless charm to any garden and come in a variety of sizes to suit any outdoor space.

Planting Accessories

It can be easy to get caught up in the excitement of selecting the prettiest planters and the healthiest blooming plants in a variety of colours, and forget the tools needed to complete the job.

Plant Supports can be a really valuable asset to any garden when encouraging climbers such as ivy, honeysuckle or climbing roses. Plus, introducing some different heights to your garden really draws the eye and help creates a really interesting space. Luckily we have a large variety in all shapes and styles, in a lovely aged cast iron to add an instant touch of country cottage charm.

You’ll be surprised how many uses you find for string outdoors, great for holding your climbers in place but a nightmare when you dig out last year’s string only to find it has become your own version of the Gordian knot. Pick up a handy string dispenser to keep your gardening trouble free and have string always on hand for those little jobs.

Garden Accessories

Getting your garden ready for summer doesn’t stop with the plants, it’s the finishing touches that really come into their own when creating the perfect outdoor space.

Outdoor Lighting is essential to ensure that you can enjoy the great outdoors for as long as you fancy, not as long as the sun dictates! It also becomes a feature in your outdoor space, adding further interest and charm. Opt for a wired in piece such as this charming Swan Neck Light, or lean towards a more relaxed atmosphere with some charming Lanterns or Votives.

An outdoor storage chest is a simple but effective addition to any garden to keep clutter at bay and instantly smarten up the place. A haphazard pile of left over pots, bags of compost and trowels can really spoil the ambience you’ve worked so hard to create. Crafted from Spruce, this Aldsworth Storage Box looks perfectly at home with the garden greenery, plus, when the English weather does what it does best and turns to rain, everything will be well protected from the damp.

Al Fresco Dining

When all of the hard work is done, it’s time to sit back and enjoy with some relaxing Al Fresco dining. Check out our outdoor entertaining guide for some handy tips.

Remember to invest in some comfortable furniture, these charming Bistro Sets are perfect for smaller patios or balconies and can be easily transported for camping/beach trips. If you’re after something more family friendly, you can’t go wrong with our sturdy teak range.
